How does Pilates help your dancing?
Whether you are injured or simply looking for that extra performance edge, Pilates is a fantastic addition to any dancer’s training schedule.
Benefits for dancers attending Pilates include:
- Increased core strength, balance and coordination
- Improved foot & ankle alignment
- Increased & appropriate use of turnout/hip external rotation
- Increased flexibility
- Long, lean and strong muscles
All very important components of any dancer’s technique!
Can I do Pilates if I am injured?
Yes! Not only can you do Pilates but often it will form a pivotal role in your injury rehabilitation. Pilates offers dancers an alternative and valuable form of exercise to correct, prevent and rehabilitate dance injuries. Pilates allows your body to exercise and move in a supported and focused setting to allow your body to stay conditioned without causing further injury. It is also a fantastic way to help you achieve those technical aspects that are often overlooked in day-to-day class work.
Will Pilates at TSIC be dance-specific?
Every Pilates program at The Sports Injury Clinic is specific to the individual. Often dancers who have undertaken traditional Pilates classes find that it is not enough for their unique needs and abilities. Fortunately many of our experienced practitioners have spent years working with and treating dancers. Narelle Potter (Pilates Director), Jo Lane (Pilates instructor), Roberta Dwyer-Smith (Pilates instructor), Jelena Durovik (Pilates instructor) each understand the unique needs of a dancer having danced for years themselves.
How often do I need to do Pilates?
It is important that if you are using Pilates as a rehabilitation program from an injury that you trial it for at least six weeks to notice any functional difference. While it is generally recommended to do a session once a week, you may feel, and your Pilates instructor may suggest, that you come twice a week to begin with to allow a quicker improvement and return to full activity.
“In 10 sessions, you will feel the difference, in 20 sessions you will see the difference, in 30 sessions you’ll have an entirely new body” Joseph H. Pilates
