What will Pilates do for my arthritis?
Pilates is a gentle form of exercise that will help keep the joints moving freely and your muscles strong. There is no cure for arthritis however studies have shown that by keeping your joints moving and the muscles surrounding your joints strong your quality of life is significantly greater.
Will Pilates make my pain worse?
No. Pilates is low impact exercise and should not make your joints any more painful. Pilates exercises promote:
- Free flowing movements of individual joints
- Basic strengthening to the important stabilizing muscles groups
- Basic stretching to tight muscles restricting joints
All the exercises are performed in a balanced and controlled manner; you will never be expected to push into the pain barrier.
Do I have to be fit and flexible to do Pilates?
No you certainly don’t. Our Sports Injury Clinic Pilates Program caters for people of all different standards. Our point of difference by attending The Sports Injury Clinic Pilates classes is that you are on your own individual program working towards your goals fully supervised at all times by Health Care Professionals.
How long should I do Pilates for?
It is best to give Pilates a go over a period of at least 6 weeks as research shows us that it takes that period of time to make changes and correct faulty ways of using your muscles. It is recommended that you attend a session at least once a week and then have a couple of exercises that you go home and practice in between to gain more benefits.
Is it suitable for Joint Replacement Surgery?
Pilates at The Sports Injury Clinic is often used for both to build up your muscles prior to surgery. We again recommend 6 weeks and will be in contact with your GP or Surgeon on your progress. Likewise, following Joint Replacement Surgery, Pilates exercise are used successfully to improve walking distance, stairs, as well as regaining knee bend and muscle strength.
