TSIC Active Arthritis and Exercise, Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the progressive degeneration of articular cartilage (the hard shiny surface) in your joints.
Risk factors for OA include trauma, repetitive stress, age, gender and most significantly obesity.
Weight loss of 5kg may be associated with a 50% reduction in developing symptoms of knee OA, and for those already with OA weight loss may reduce the severity of pain.
We know that prolonged inactivity exacerbates pain and stiffness, decreases mobility, causes weakness and functional disability.
Therefore if you have OA you need to keep moving!
Goals of exercise for OA include:
- Maintain joint range of motion
- Increase strength and endurance of muscles
- Increase aerobic capacity
- Assist with weight loss (or weight management)
- Improve function with activities of daily living
- Prepare for the best outcome with surgery if a joint replacement is needed
- Be able to give you post surgery rehabilitation for you if you require a joint replacement
