Knee Injuries
A knee injury can put you out of action; whether it be on the sporting field, in the workplace or even in everyday life...
The physiotherapists at The Sports Injury Clinic can provide expert advice and treatment to speed up recovery and get you active again following the knee injury or surgery.
Types of knee injuries
Acute injuries: Result from a sudden trauma, such as an awkward fall, collision or twist of the knee joint.
Overuse injuries: Result from continuous activity or overload, such as running, jumping, cycling, weight training or bushwalking. These start gradually and usually relate to a range of factors such as structural or biomechanical problems, training methods, footwear, technique or running style.
What to do after a sprain
As soon as possible, and for 72 hours after injury, use the Rice method:
Rest: Take it easy and only move within your limit of pain. |
Ice: As soon as possible, and for every 20 minutes every two hours (for 48-72 hours), apply ice or a frozen gel pack wrapped in a damp towel. This helps to control bleeding and pain and reduced secondary tissue damage. |
Compression: Firmly bandage the knee and include 5 cm above and below the joint. This helps to control the swelling. |
Elevation: As much as possible, elevate your leg higher than the level of your heart to reduce swelling. |
How physiotherapy can help
The physiotherapists at The Sports Injury Clinic will examine your knee to determine the type, extent and causes of your injury, and can order an X-ray or refer you to a doctor if needed. Early treatment will reduce any pain or swelling. Special techniques called mobilisation may help to increase the movement of your knee joint (if required), improving your recovery. We will teach you exercises to improve the strength of the knee and other lower leg muscles to enhance your recovery and help prevent further injuries.
Rehabilitate
Recovery can start very early after an injury. Physiotherapy rehabilitation techniques will help reduce the time that your knee is painful and movement is restricted so that you can get back to work and sport more quickly. Rehabilitation also facilitates a good quality ligament repair and the return of normal muscle and nerve function.
Avoid any of the HARM factors in the first 48 hours to prevent increased swelling and help your recovery. The HARM factors are, Heat, Alcohol, Running, Massage.

Cards from Peninsula Dragonflys
Peninsula Dragonflys is a support group for women and men whose lives have been affected by breast cancer. The club currently consists of people fighting cancer as well as survivors and supporters.
In September 2006 the new local group was formed, the Peninsula Drangonflys, which trains out of the Patterson Lakes Canoe Club. The club desperately needs a new boat trailer for their recently acquired new boat. The team consists of 18 cancer survivors and 4 supporters. Heather Thomson is a member of the Peninsula Dragonflys and a team member at The Sports Injury Clinic in Frankston.
To support the fundraising of the boat trailer The Sports Injury Clinic is selling cards which have been designed and beautifully drawn by a member of the Peninsula Dragonflys, only $10 each for a packet of 5 cards. There are two types of cards, everyday or Christmas style. All the funds raised from selling the cards go directly to the group. We only need to sell 400 packs of cards for the club to purchase their new trailer.
Cards are available now, and can be purchased three ways.
Over the counter from The Sports Injury Clinic at 361 Nepean Hwy, Frankston 3199.
- By ringing 9783 9990 to purchase some over the phone.
- Or by emailing pippa@tsic.com.au, and arranging to pay over the phone.
Cards can be sent out, postage cost will apply.
The members from the club all live in the southern suburbs of Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. New members are always welcome.

The Phoenix Rises!
The Phoenix Program reveals it’s groundbreaking results from the FIRST instalment of this unique approach to weight loss.
In early May 2007, 9 hopeful participants entered into a comprehensive weight loss program, the first of its kind in Australia, looking for an empowered and measured approach to losing weight, keeping it off and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Four months later, the group, which started with an overall weight of 1123.30 kgs, has shed a combined total of approximately 160kgs and a total of over 600cm from their bodies.
One male participant has been cured of Type 2 Diabetes, while another female participant has been able to halve her Blood Pressure medication, with the aim of coming off it altogether.
The Phoenix Program is a groundbreaking weight loss program and the FIRST of its kind in Australia to use a unique, and highly effective, three-phase structure, spanning a comprehensive 12-month period. The result of extensive work completed by a group of experts with collectively decades of knowledge and experience in the health profession, The Phoenix Program is the only one of its kind in Australia that combines understanding, education and support to help participants achieve their weight loss goals
“Many of the participants have typical weight loss stories - they have tried everything available from the sublime to the ridiculous and have found The Phoenix Program to be the best they have tried due to our comprehensive support and counselling management” says Pippa.
Crunch time came for the participants on June 22, 2007, the final day of their 4-week lock-down at The Stables in Red Hill. Now it was time to face the challenges of their every day lives for the next 45 weeks, and incorporate what they have learnt from The Phoenix Program; to commit to the changes they had made to their lifestyle and mind set.
Throughout every component of the program, participants have access to a team of highly qualified, experienced and committed professionals who provide a consistent support network over a realistic time frame.
“The main challenges for all participants at this point was to not slip back into their bad habits,” says Pippa. “However with the on-going counselling and support that The Phoenix Program offers, the participants have found that these old habits are being managed more effectively, which is what they say sets this program apart from any other they have tried.”
“Due to The Phoenix Program encouraging participants to focus on changing their lifestyle and understanding the decisions they make with regards to food & exercise etc, they are still able to enjoy things like chocolate, desserts and alcohol in moderation - and that is the key to success.”
And the word success can definitely be associated with the first program of its kind to be run in Australia - curing Type 2 diabetes, halving blood pressure medication, and not to mention instilling a healthy approach to food, exercise and lifestyles in general, in participants!!
If The Phoenix Program sounds perfect for you or someone you care about, a new program begins in November 2007. But book now as there are only a few places left.
